Societies always have had a boost of change with new technologies, usually generating some more wealth. Some societies distribute the new wealth in some socially acceptable fashion (furthering the social justice, a la Scandinavia), others improve the lives only of the few (raw capitalism US style), third – help the very few to control the rest of the population (from Russia to Saudi Arabia). The innovations act like catalyzers for society, boosting whatever is characteristic to that society. Even I would like to claim that the first type of distribution is the most sustainable there is no direct proof of that.
In that sense to blame technologies for the rapid change and often missteps of a society is like blaming a teenager that he became an adult and took his life into his own hands.
